This image shows large sand dunes in the North Polar sand sea on Mars. It is one of a series of repeat images of the same dunes, taken at different times, in order to determine the type and extent of changes in the dunes over time. Dunes tend to migrate slowly on Earth under continuous wind regimes (on the order of several to tens of meters per year), and we are just starting to verify movement on Martian dunes with these repeat HiRISE images. read more

    Updated: 2012-08-07 08:47:54
A Russian Proton M launch vehicle launched he Telkom 3 and Express MD-2 satellites at 1931 GMT on 6 August. During the launch the Briz M upper stage was to conduct five engine firings to place the satellites into a geostationary transfer orbit. During the third firing of the upper stage the engines shut down after 7 seconds instead of the intended burn of 18 minutes and 5 seconds. Tracking video has shown four items in a 267 kilometre by 5012 kilometre orbit with an inclination of 49.91 degrees. The four items are assumed to be the two satellites, the upper stage and its external tank. It is not yet known if the satellites can be salvaged or will be left to eventually re-enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up.

  • Hydrogen fuel cells provide power when fuel supply is off

    Updated: 2012-07-11 15:20:01
(Phys.org) -- Fuel cells, which generate electricity from the chemical energy of a fuel such as hydrogen, are not intrinsically capable of storing energy. When a fuel cell’s hydrogen supply runs out or is temporarily interrupted, the cell’s power output quickly decreases to zero. If an application requires energy storage, then the fuel cell must be coupled to an external charge storage device, such as a battery, which increases the weight and volume of the system. But now researchers have designed a hydrogen fuel cell with a new anode that can supply electricity up to 14 times longer than conventional fuel cells, which could be particularly useful for mobile energy applications.
